Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to find in there! as we heard in Forrest Gump. I confess that I've had a few surprises when I've peeked into some of the boxes I've been offered. In most of them, the surprise was good. But not always. And one of these days I went peeking into another box, ChatGPT.
Truth be told, despite being tech-savvy, I started with some caution. I started by staring at the computer screen. I wouldn't seem to know what to type. I think I am much more comfortable talking to people, even at a distance and even through a chat box. In fact, one of these days I needed to resolve an issue with EDP and when I realized I was talking to a chatbot. I confess that after a minute and a half I got fed up with the questions that the software asked me and as I couldn't solve the problem I went looking for EDP's phone number.
But back to the CHATGPT, after a few minutes I decided to start. The software asked me my name and asked for my contact number. I thought this would be an appropriate way to start a conversation with a machine. However, as I don't know the software yet, I think it may have been cheeky of me to do so. Furthermore, the machine didn't tell me its name and didn't give me its contact number. But I kept going.
They wrote that they were wanting to improve their answers and as such were gathering feedback. I assumed that was up to me. I liked that they also told me that some of the information they might give me might not be true or correct. I accepted the humility of the machine and there I continued. They added that the conversations could be reviewed by some of their professionals to improve the system. And they asked me not to share any sensitive information. I was warned. I took a deep breath and moved on.
Hello, I wrote. Hello! Can I help you today? said the machine. Yes! But first I would like to know your name! I am ChatGPT, a language model developed by Artificial Intelligence, it continued. And then he asked me if there was anything specific that I would like to know or talk about. I got the feeling she would be assertive and get straight to the point.
I told him then that I would like to talk about autism. She promptly answered yes and would like to know if I had any specific questions or if I wanted to know anything in particular. First I asked him if he was autistic! I am an artificial intelligence and do not have the ability to be diagnosed with autism or any other cognitive condition. I am able to provide information and answer questions about autism, but I am not able to experience it myself! he replied. I told him that I was not an autistic person either, but that I would like to talk to someone about the topic. I understand. While I am not able to have personal experiences, I can still provide information and answer questions about autism. There are also many resources available for individuals looking to talk to someone about autism, such as support groups, therapy, and hotlines. If you are looking for support, you may want to contact organizations like Autism Speaks or the Autism Society, which can connect you to local resources and support groups! replied. I liked the answer, it was honest. How can an autistic person better understand themselves? I asked him. One way an autistic person can understand themselves better is through education and awareness of the condition. This can include reading books and articles about autism, watching lectures and videos by experts, and talking to other people living with autism. It is also important that the autistic person has access to health resources, such as therapy and medical support, to help them understand and manage their symptoms. In addition, it is important for the autistic person to learn to accept and value themselves, and to have the support of understanding friends and family! she replied.
I thanked him for the conversation and told him I had to go and make lunch, but that one of these days I would talk again. Welcome back! I'm glad I was able to help. I'll be here whenever you're ready to have another chat. Have a great lunch! he replied. I was left wondering if I asked him for any specific recipe!
